Mikheil Saakashvili’s plight must be resolved as soon as possible, following Georgia’s domestic law and generally accepted principles and standards of international humanitarian law

The following is attributable to the Global Citizens International Movement Press Office:

The Coordinator-General of Global Citizens International Movement asked the leaders of the two factions in the Parliament of Georgia for help to obtain permission from the national authorities to visit Georgia for humanitarian purposes as an international human rights defender.

As the Global Citizens Press Office reported, a request for that effect had previously been sent to the national authorities of Georgia.

In particular, the letter states:

“…guided by the purposes and principles of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, adopted by the General Assembly in its resolution 53/144, reaffirming the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recalling the International Covenants on Human Rights and other relevant instruments; Recalling United Nations resolution 65/283 of 22 June 2011 on strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention, and resolution, which encourages and recognizes the critical part of the Good Offices of civil society actors active in mediation:
The Coordinator-General of the Global Citizens international movement has the honor to ask you to provide assistance and assistance in obtaining permission for the General Coordinator to visit Georgia for humanitarian purposes as an international human rights defender.”

The aforementioned letter was sent to:
Mr. Levan Bezhashvili, Acting Chairman of the Faction “United National Movement – Unified Opposition ‘Unity Makes Strength.”
Mr. Mamuka Mdinaradze, Chairman of the Faction “The Georgian Dream.”
Mr. Irakli Kobakhidze, Leader of the Parliamentary Majority.
