Explanation of Position of Global Citizens, regarding the decisions taken by the national authorities in Ukraine to impose restrictions on the activities of several Ukrainian media outlets

In addition to concerns about the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, we are alarmed by the number of inquiries we have recently received from human rights defenders, civil society activists, media representatives, and participants of the International Initiative to nominate Joe Biden for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is currently being implemented by Global Citizens, in respect to Global Citizens’ position, regarding the decisions taken by the national authorities in Ukraine to impose restrictions on the activities of several Ukrainian media outlets.

Based on the results of consultations held with Global Citizens partners on this issue on August 24, 2021, the Coordinator instructed the Bureau to prepare an appropriate explanation and bring it to the attention of all interested parties.

Explanation of the position of Global Citizens regarding the decisions taken by the national authorities in Ukraine to impose restrictions on the activities of several Ukrainian media outlets will be published on the official Global Citizens websites: www.bidenprize.com and www.galchenko.eu, and will be available to the attention of all respected interested parties.

By way of information of the position of Global Citizens on the above question, a separate document will be forwarded to:

H.E. Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights;

H.E. Madam Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, United States Representative to the United Nations

Ms. Irene Khan, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression;

Movement Global Citizens are an independent, nonprofit international movement set up by human rights defenders, members of the media, and men of goodwill. The Movement’s nongovernmental and independent character gives it the flexibility that makes it possible to work in the most challenging circumstances of the global post-pandemic world.

Global Citizens do not allow and reject any attempts from the international community to politicize the activities of the Movement and give political color to his humanitarian programs.
