We call on the Georgian authorities and all the political parties involved to ensure that appropriate measures are adopted to ensure fair treatment of Mr. Saakashvili, in accordance with Georgia’s laws and Georgia’s international human rights obligations.
We express our words of sincere support to the family and friends of the detained citizen of Ukraine, who are mentally distressed by the situation, regardless of the reasons for which it occurred, and first of all, the mother of the detainee, Ms. Giuli Alasania, and call on all parties involved in this situation to give her the maximum possible help.
We are sympathetic to Tbilisi’s position on the detention of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and hope that this situation will not affect the development of the strategic partnership between Georgia and Ukraine.
A copy of this Joint Statement is being sent to Ms. Nino Lomjaria of Georgia’s Public Defender (Ombudsman) for further transmission to its high destination and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.
